FAQ – EF Academy New York

Here are the answers to some of the most common questions we receive about our international high school.

  • Studying at an international high school presents students with immense opportunities to achieve the academic foundation, emotional maturity and life skills that will set them up for success at university and in life. In addition to offering renowned academic programs such as the US High School Diploma and IB Diploma programs, an international high school like EF Academy New York exposes students to a multitude of cultures and perspectives through a culturally inclusive curriculum and the diversity of nationalities present on campus. Students who experience studying abroad during high school gain a level of independence that makes the transition to university easier, while studying in New York with access to one of the most exciting, international cities in the world lets students complement their learning with excursions to first-class museums, universities and other cultural institutions right at their doorstep.

  • Living in residence halls on campus is an enriching experience that teaches you how to be independent, care for yourself and practice mutual respect. Most EF Academy New York students talk about their roommates as their family away from home and they become their friends for life. The Dorm Heads and Residential Advisors supervise the residence halls, ensuring your living environment is ideal for studying but also friendly and inviting so you feel right at home.

  • All teaching at EF Academy is done in English, with the exception of the IB Diploma Language A courses. Studying at our international high schools strongly promotes total fluency in English because you not only speak this global language in class, but you also use it during social activities. Immersing yourself in the language and the culture that goes with it will help you score higher on English proficiency exams like the IELTS or TOEFL.

  • We don't expect you to be completely fluent in English, but we do require you to have enough of an understanding to keep up with studying in English. We offer a 1- and 2-term Bridge Program on campus for students who want to strengthen their academic English skills before starting the school year. Our Admissions Consultants can also provide information on English programs for you to take in the months or year leading up to you joining EF Academy. Just get in touch and they'll be happy to help.

  • EF Academy does not offer scholarships to study at our international high schools in the US and UK. However, our Admissions Consultants will be happy to discuss your financial options and explain our payment plans to ensure a smooth process.

  • We are sensitive to what it means for parents to let their child study abroad and do all that we can to ensure you feel close to them. With our secure, custom-built online Parent Portal, you can view your child’s schedule, grades, attendance, achievements and read updates from school staff and faculty at any time. Your child's Pathway Manager will provide regular updates to you about their wellbeing, and you will also receive a monthly newsletter from the Head of School that highlights important dates and reminders, department updates, activities and events that are happening in and around campus.
